Stretching Potentiality (2017)
By Lotta Beckers
Although it is constantly calculated in physics, it remains unclear what energy actually is. Potential energy describes the energy of a body that depends on its position within a gravitational field. Also known as “positional energy,” it can be converted into various forms of energy, such as kinetic energy. It is energy not yet released—a moment of greatest stillness and highest potentiality.
Stretching Potentiality is an aesthetic exploration of potential energy as the phenomenon between act and potency. How can potential energy be made tangible when energy is only measurable in the moment of release? How can one endure a state of maximum possibility? And what happens to unused potential energy?
Five performers, two LED spotlights, a soundtrack, a balloon, and a trampoline stretch a situation of highest tension over 20 minutes.
