Lotta Beckers (she/they) lives in Berlin and works as a dramaturge, researcher and artist. She studied Applied Theatre Studies at the University Gießen, Choreography and Dance at the Danish National School of Performing Arts in Copenhagen and holds an M.A. in European Media Studies from the University of Potsdam. She is part of the class for performative arts led by Anna Zett and Jule Flierl at the academy of fine arts in Leipzig (HGB). Since 2017 she holds a stipend by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation.

As a freelance dramaturge she works in dance and performance, as well as in documentary theatre. She is engaged in an ongoing collaboration with theatre director Noam Brusilovsky and costume and stage designer Magdalena Emmerig, developing research-based documentary theatre projects that interrogate power structures and explore the limits of representation on stage. Their works have been presented at venues including Volkstheater München, Residenztheater München, Sophiensaele Berlin, and Stadttheater Klagenfurt. In 2022, their piece Nicht Sehen was awarded the Nestroy Special Prize.

Lotta also collaborates closely as a dramaturge and sometimes performer with choreographer Deva Schubert, who’s voice-based dance performances explore the power of intimacy in social relations. Their joint works have been shown at Radialsystem, Sophiensaele, mumok Vienna, Berlinische Galerie, Schinkel Pavillon, Pickle Bar Berlin, and Kunstraum Niederösterreich among others. The piece Glitch Choir was invited to festivals such as Tanztage Berlin and ImpulsTanz Vienna, where it received the Young Choreographer’s Award in 2024.

Lotta’s own artistic research evolves around the entanglements of desire, affects and power – through archive research, writing, movement, text and video, often in collaborations, sometimes through solo work. Form and medium are always re-defined through the artistic engagement with a theme and the specific context in which it is realized. At the moment she is particularly curious about choreographing text.

In her artistic approach, she situates herself between the documentary and the poetic, the intimate and the public and searches for the historical and structural within the personal feeling. Moving fluidly between theatre, dance and performance, she approaches dramaturgy as both a structuring, complicating and opening practice that is intensively engaged in the artistic process. Theory serves as a driving force in her work, encouraging new modes of perception and experience.

In her work, she has been called a sparring partner, a witness, an editor, a friend, a joker, a wife.
