Loosing My Teeth (2024)

Video essay by Lotta Beckers

Losing My Teeth is an auto-fictional video essay that explores the entanglement of desire and self-destruction in dialogue with Kathy Acker’s writing. The jaw serves as an anatomical and narrative hinge, linking outbursts of rage, anorexia, and teeth grinding. Inspired by Kathy Acker’s adaptation of Don Quixote, the protagonist becomes a knight through her refusal to suffer, attempting to get rid of herself in order to be able to love. The video unfolds as a collage of biographical footage and staged sequences, using the force of fiction to question the alienated gaze upon the self. In an intimate and humorous manner, the work digs into messy affects and approaches masochism as a strategy for undoing power relations.
